Text Box: MEDICAL EXAMINATION: As a prerequisite for appointment, appointees may be required to pass thorough medical and psychiatric examinations to be administered by the appointing authority.  Any psychological, medical, or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of the duties of the position, cause the appointee to be a hazard to himself/herself or others, or become aggravated as a result of performance of these duties will be cause for REJECTION.
 
APPLICATION
Candidates may file only ONE application.  Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on the eligible list(s) based on residency, volunteer or exempt preferences.
 
EXAMINATION FEE:
An examination fee of $35 (check, money order or credit card) is required and MUST be SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.  The $35 fee will be waived for candidates who are receiving General Assistance, Aid to Families with Dependant Children (AFDC) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
 
STUDY GUIDES:
A Study Guide and Physical Conditioning Manual are available at the NJ Department of Personnel website (www.state.nj.us/personnel)
Also recommended is: Entrance Firefighter Written Exam Study Guide compiled by Arthur R. Couvillon and available at most major bookstores.

ELIZABETH CITY ORDINANCE: From the time of application to the date of hire, applicant MUST be a RESIDENT of the City of ELIZABETH, NJ
 
CITIZENSHIP: Applicants must be CITIZENS of the UNITED STATES
 
EDUCATION: Applicants must be GRADUATES from HIGH SCHOOL, VOCATIONAL SCHOOL, or possess an approved HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENT CERTIFICATE.
 
AGE: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and no more than 35 years of age at the announced closing date for filing applications.  
NOTE:  In determining maximum age eligibility of veterans, time spent in active military service during periods specified in the Department of Personnel laws and rules will be deducted from the attained age.
 
NOTE: When applicants have reached their 35th birthday, they are considered over 35 years old.  Age limits are based on the announced closing date for filing Department of Personnel applications.
